Silver Amulet Medallion 1770

Un Peso Sagrado Verdadero San Jose

Known to the local Philippine collectors as “Amulets”, “Silver-Shakers” or “Holy Pesos”, the history of these highly collectable amulets is confusing at best. Some local dealers claim they were made by Catholic Friars in the late 1800's while others say they were produced in the early 1900's by over-striking period US-Philippine silver coins. Either way, it is claimed that these amulets will bring protection, prosperity and/or good luck.
Obverse: Roma Y Libertad 1770 / Liberty Cap with Rays with the word Buenas. Reverse: Un Peso Sagrado Verdadero Sn Jose / Holy Man Receiving Coins From An Angel.
This "Anting-Anting" is listed as H-1412 in Dr. Honeycutt's new “Philippine Medals and Tokens 1780 – 2010”). This particular amulet also contains the rattler making it even more rare.
This amulet measures ± 40 mm in diameter and weighs ± 27.2 grams.
